Support the Caravan to Arizona organized by Librotraficante!

In New York City, activists will gather at the New York Public Library to participate in a press conference and picket to show solidarity with Librotraficante and the people of Arizona. We will be asking for donations to send copies of the banned books on the caravan to Arizona.

On January 10, 2012 the Tucson Unified School District in Arizona voted to suspend its Mexican American Studies Program after a judge ruled that it violated a new state law and could lose millions in aid for a particular school district. This is another racist message from Arizona’s elite to people of color and especially Latinos of Mexican descent. That message is: get back, get down, your lives are worth nothing to this system.

According to news sources, 60% of the 53,000 students in that school district are Latino/a. Arizona is ground zero for vile anti-immigrant legislation. Reminiscent of book burnings in Nazi Germany, after the ruling, school officials began to gather up any books that dealt with Chicano or Mexican American history. Sometimes those books were gathered up right in front of the students who had come to class to study their history.

Condemns Government plans to shut down Post Offices

The May 1st Coalition is outraged by the news that the government is making plans to shut down 3,700 post offices and lay off 220,00 workers of the United States Postal Service (USPS). This is an assault on all workers and communities throughout the country. It is also a vicious anti-union attack. It is racist as it disproportionately affects workers of color. It directly affects the communities the May 1st Coalition fights for.

Rompimiento amoroso con Trader Joe’s….cancelando la manifestación

Querid@s Amantes de la Justicia alimentaria,

Con mucha alegría queremos anunciar el final de nuestra campaña en contra de Trader Joe’s. Cuando anunciamos el día nacional de manifestaciones que estaba planeado para este domingo, Trader Joe’s se convirtió en la décima corporación más grande en firmar el acuerdo de Comida Justa con la Coalición de trabajadores de Imokalee (CIW). Al fin firmaron!

Estamos cancelando oficialmente la manifestación de la marcha de nuestro Rompimiento amoroso que habíamos planeado para las 2pm el 12 de Febrero. Porfavor avísenle a su gente.

CIW ha estado luchando por mucho tiempo para lograr que se respeten los derechos básicos de los trabajadores agrícolas y su dignidad. Nos han inspirado para seguir luchando en solidaridad con su causa y por un sistema alimentario más justo.

Como aliados en NYC estamos muy orgullosos de esta victoria. La campaña en contra de Trader Joe’s empezó en Nueva York hace casi 2 años, y se esparció rápidamente por todo el país. Si participaste en una marcha o en todas, tu apoyo ha sido importantísimo para activar la campaña en contra de Trader joes y darle vida a las peticiones de CIW y para exigir que Trader Joe’s se siente a negociar. Gracias por ir de la mano de los trabajadores agrícolas y por luchar por lo que es justo con la Alianza comunitaria en NY.

La campaña por la Justicia Alimentaria continua. Hemos triunfado en esta gran batalla, pero la lucha no se termina. CIW tiene puestos sus ojos en algunos supermecados y vamos a pensar juntos en estrategias para pensar cual es nuestro siguiente blanco en la ciudad de Nueva York, así que sigan atentos a las novedades!

Hasta entonces, es hora de CELEBRAR! Muy pronto anunciaremos la fecha de nuestra CELEBRACION DE VICTORIA, y queremos que vengan todos y todas.

Trader Joe’s Break-Up Rally Called Off

Dear Fair Food Allies,

It is with great joy that we are announcing the end of our campaign against Trader Joe’s. In anticipation of the national day of action that was scheduled for this Sunday, Trader Joe’s became the tenth major corporation to sign a Fair Food Agreement with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW). We are officially calling off our Break-Up Rally that was schedule for 2pm on February 12th. Please let folks in your networks know.

The CIW has been fighting long and hard to achieve basic rights and dignity for farmworkers. They have inspired us, their allies, to fight in solidarity for a more just and fair food system.

As allies in NYC, we are especially proud of this victory. The Trader Joe’s campaign started in NYC, close to two years ago, and quickly spread across the country. Whether you attended a single action or all of them, you’ve helped activate the Trader Joe’s campaign, breathe life into the CIW’s demands, and bring Trader Joe’s to the negotiating table. Thank you for standing with farmworkers and for fighting the good fight with CFA.

The Campaign for Fair Food continues. We’ve won this very major battle but the struggle is far from over. The CIW has its sights on several other supermarkets and we’ll be strategizing alongside them to figure out the best next target for NYC. So stay tuned!

Until then, it’s time to CELEBRATE! We will be announcing the date of our VICTORY PARTY shortly and we expect y’all to come out.

Thank you, once again, for all your support and solidarity over the last few years. We hope and trust we can continue to count on it!

Manifestación y entrega de cartas de separación y fin de nuestro amor

El amorío con Trader Joe’s se acabó! Nos cansamos de tantas mentiras y promesas falsas. Se acabó! Trader Joes se presenta como muy completo, muy chido – bacán y sostenible, pero solo es una imagen. Después de casi dos años de una campaña nacional, Trader Joe’s todavia se resiste a firmar un acuerdo con la Coalición de trabajadores de Immokalee, un grupo de trabajadores agrícolas que exitosamente han presionado a corporaciones gigantes como Whole Foods y McDonalds para que participen de los acuerdos que garantizan que los trabajadores agrícolas que proveen sus cadenas de proveedores, sean tratados humanamente y que por lo menos se les pague un centavo más por libra del tomate que piscan/cosechan. Y ahora para completar, Trader Joe’s abrirá su primera tienda en Florida, a solo 30 millas de distancia de Immokalee on Immokalee Road. CIW planea una gran manifestación durante la gran apertura de la nueva tienda y tendremos una acción en solidaridad aquí en Nueva York para decirle a Trader Joe’s BASTA! Se acabó, hasta aquí llegamos!

The love affair with Trader Joe’s is over! We’re tired of the lies and false promises! Trader Joe’s claims to be wholesome, hip and sustainable, but it’s all just an image. After nearly two years of a nation-wide campaign, Trader Joe’s still refuses to sign an agreement with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, a group of farm workers in Florida who have successfully pressured corporate giants like Whole Foods and McDonald’s to agree to ensure that farm workers in their supply chains get treated humanely and get paid at least one penny more per pound of tomatoes they pick. And now, to top it off, Trader Joe’s is opening it’s first Florida store, nly 30 miles away from Immokalee on Immokalee Road. The CIW is planning a huge action during the “Grand Opening” weekend of the new store and we’ll be having a solidarity action here in New York to let Trader Joe’s know that enough is enough!

The Community/Farmworker Alliance, NYC—one of many collectives nationally that organizes in solidarity with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers- invites you to join us and Trader Joe’s customers on Sunday, February 12th at 2:00pm in front of the Union Square Trader Joe’s. We will rally and make noise as a delegation takes in our break up letters to Trader Joe’s. Featuring all the giant pink hearts you can stand, live music, and hot chocolate.
