IMA Statement for International Migrants Day 2012

by on December 19, 2012

December 18, 2012

As we commemorate the 12th year of the International Migrants Day, the International Migrants’ Alliance (IMA) salutes all migrant workers, refugees, displaced peoples and their families as we all contribute to building a movement for the recognition, upholding and protection of our rights and dignity.

In many countries, migrant organizations and unions engage governments of both migrant-‐ sending and receiving countries to challenge and call for the repeal of anti-‐migrant policies, to address immediate concerns and campaigns about imperiled migrants, devise alternatives and propositions to resolve forced labor migration.

The world witnessed how our refugee brothers and sisters campaigned against the racist and anti-‐ refugee laws that the German government recently legislated; how our migrant organizations and their networks and friends successfully pressured the Taiwan government in releasing a migrant victimized by flawed State processes and policies; how we in the IMA and all our allies and friends campaigned for the securing of migrant workers affected by the strife in the Arab world, particularly those in Syria.

Dear friends in the IMA,

Warm solidarity greetings from HK!

As the weather in most of our destination countries grows colder, the issues that confront us especially with the

Here in Hong Kong, the issue of the Right of Abode (permanent residence) for foreign domestic workers remains the hottest item. Most government officials and political parties have used scare tactics and anti-migrant hysteria to create animosity among local people against us. Nonetheless, we respond to such with our continuous efforts and campaigns together with IMA members here and fellow local supporters.

December 18, International Migrants Day. With that, I hope that all of you are now preparing for the upcoming International Migrants Day on December 18. We have less than a month to prepare for this and it will be crucial then for us to coordinate with one another about our respective initiatives and plans for the upcoming occasion.

If there’s one experience that Mexicans have in common more than any other, more even than hatred and repudiation of the mutual violence of the narcos and the government, it’s migration. In Oaxaca, 18% of its 3.7 million people have left for other parts of Mexico, and especially for the U.S. Almost half its towns have shrunk, and migration has become part of the daily experience for almost every family.

I just spent three days listening to indigenous people here talk about it, in a unique organization that brings together people from both sides of the border, the Binational Front of Indigenous Organizations (FIOB).
